Description:

Back in the 1980s Mercedes-Benz really knew how to make a car - their vehicles from that time were unmatched in style and reliability. One of the very best examples was the 560 SEL, a full-sized, limo-like sedan that cost the modern equivalent of $150K when it was new. If you had the money back then this was the best car on the road with it's V8 engine and amenities like heated seats, an electronically adjustable rear bench seat, and even reading lights back there. It was also a horse. This one, like so many others, has kept running and running and I think it has a long way to go. It hasn't gone through the last 37 years unscathed - the clearcoat on the paint is coming up in some places, it has some small patches of rust here and there (nothing too serious in my opinion but do look at the pics/see in person), and some of the interior functionality isn't working like it should (see below for a list). But if you were looking for the coolest car you can drive for under $5,000, I humbly suggest you've found it. The car starts easily and runs well. The interior is in decent shape - I think the seats are still comfortable. It has a new battery, purchased last year, and the tires are in fine shape. It drives pretty well in the winter with snow tires, and it comes with two of those in the trunk, also purchased last year, for the rear wheels. And when you close those heavy steel doors, the resulting thunk is very satisfying. It does have some issues, as one might expect for a 37-year-old car that has been put to work: * The sunroof does not open * The climate control system only blows hot air right now. I believe the Control Unit is not sending the proper electric signal to the thermostat. * The passenger side window stopped opening recently. *One of the spark plugs occasionally gets some oil on it - when this happens the idle will become rough but it remains drivable. However I have switched plugs when this happens. It's always the same plug. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list, but I think those are all the major things. Come check it out for yourself!
