The Coleman Scanoe is/was a cross between a skiff and a canoe – hence “scanoe.” Made to mount a motor, a Scanoe is wider than a regular canoe and has squareback design with a strong aluminum motor mount. Versatile, portable, fast, and convenient transportation to and from and on the water… a Scanoe is just cool. The dual function of a Scanoe is not only great for cruising around with a motor but more importantly, trolling for fish. The option to take off the motor makes this vessel great for paddling/rowing as well! Finding a Scanoe is getting increasingly more difficult, as they’re no longer made, and they are hard to find in good condition. Production started with Coleman in the 1980’s and then the brand was sold to Pelican International around 2001. This squareback canoe can mount a 5 HP motor or battery operated electric trolling motor. The ’85 and ’89 and later models are pretty similar. The most noticeable difference between them is that the ’85 only has 1.75 HP capacity rating. Coleman increased motor capacity a few years later to 5 HP. Also, a slightly wider beam on the later models makes them more stable and thus they can hold more weight and the larger motor. Another major selling point of the later Scanoe is the incredibly impact resistant and proprietary RAM-X material.
